Pharmacological effects

1. Effects on digestive system
The aqueous and ether extracts of galangal significantly counteracted water-infused stress ulcers in mice and hydrochloric acid-damaged ulcers in rats; the aqueous extract significantly inhibited gastrointestinal propulsion in mice. Both extracts significantly counteracted castor oil-induced diarrhea, and their aqueous extracts were also effective against senna-induced diarrhea. The aqueous extract had a synergistic transaminase elevating effect. Both extracts had significant cholestatic effects on anesthetized rats, with the ether extract having a stronger effect. Some studies have shown that galangal aqueous decoction has excitatory effect on guinea pig isolated intestinal tube at low concentration, and inhibitory effect at high concentration. It also has the effect of promoting the contractility of isolated rabbit small intestine and gastric acid secretion in dogs, and inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins.

2. Analgesic effect
Galangal has certain analgesic effect, in the animal hot plate method and acetic acid twist test, the aqueous extract and ether extract of galangal have shown obvious analgesic effect.

3. Enhance hypoxia tolerance
The ether extract and aqueous extract of galangal given to mice by instillation could prolong the duration of open-mouth action of severed mice and the survival time of KCN poisoned mice, but did not affect the survival time of NaNO2 poisoned mice. The ether extract also prolonged the survival time and slowed down the rate of oxygen consumption in mice under atmospheric confinement hypoxia. The aqueous extract could not prolong the survival time of mice under atmospheric confinement hypoxia, but could improve the oxygen utilization ability of small Chemicalbook mice under low oxygen conditions.

4. Anti-thrombotic and anticoagulant effects
Galangal aqueous extract and volatile oil have inhibitory effects on thrombosis and coagulation. The results of the experimental in vivo vascular model showed that the two components had a significant inhibitory effect on thrombus formation in rats and had a certain anticoagulant effect, mainly involved in inhibiting the endogenous coagulation system and improving blood flow status.

5. Antibacterial effect
In vitro test, using the plate punching method, 100% of galangal decoction has antibacterial effect on Bacillus anthracis, α- and β-hemolytic streptococci, Bacillus diphtheriae and Bacillus pseudo-diphtheriae, Dictyococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus (aureus, lemon, white) and Bacillus subtilis. It also has a certain inhibitory effect on human tuberculosis bacilli.

6. Hypoglycemic effect
Galangal extract has a significant hypoglycemic effect. Researchers in the normal male New Zealand rabbits hypoglycemic experiment, found that oral administration of galangal powder 3g/kg can significantly reduce blood sugar, methanol extract and water extract of hypoglycemic effect is more obvious, when the oral dose of 4g/kg, 8h after a significant reduction in blood sugar, presumably its hypoglycemic effect may be achieved by promoting the body's pancreatic secretion of insulin.

7. Antioxidant effect
